. . . family
mother & father . . .
tim never quite felt connected to his mother, isobelle cotton, and his father, benjamin cotton. he puts this down to his extremely strict upbringing, although it was never abusive or anything of the sort. his father was often absent due to his job as a businessman, and the family often traveled across the country due to said position.
when he was 18, his parents told him that his grandmother edith was disowned from the family and that tim wasn’t to contact her again. despite his devastation, he initially thought nothing of it as it made sense; his dad and his grandmother hated each other. close to his 19th birthday, however, he started to see inconsistencies in his parents’ story. on his 19th birthday he told his parents he was going out for the night to celebrate, but he secretly drove to his grandmother’s cottage to visit her. a godawful smell prevented him from entering, so he slept in his car and went home. he spent the next few months doing some investigating, and came up with the theory that she was dead and his parents were covering it up to commit benefit fraud. he spent the next year gathering evidence to support his theory, but sat on it for a further year due to a few reasons; he didn’t want to cause stress for his sister, he had a surgery coming up and he didn’t want anything to get in the way of the healing process, and he started doubting himself.
eventually at age 21 he confronted them about it. it lead to a huge confrontation where tim’s parents begged him not to say anything and offered him money for his silence. he ended up storming out and never coming back. he continues to blackmail them for money to this day. he doesn’t wish them death or harm because that’s not the kind of person he is, but he does think they’re horrible people. he doesn’t feel sorry for blackmailing them as he feels they deserve to live their life with that fear over their heads after what they did.
grandmother . . .
tim had a good relationship with his maternal grandmother, edith davidson, who was a social recluse who lived alone in a cottage by the cornwall cliffside. she and her son-in-law absolutely detested each other, but it was always a dream of hers to have grandchildren, so tim spent a lot of his weekends as a child visiting her in cornwall. he lived with her for three years when he was 10, and it was here that he developed his passions for literature and cookery. news of her “disownment” absolutely devastated him, and he wasn’t even over that when he found out she was actually dead. he never fully got over her death.
sister . . .
tim has a younger sister, jess, who is currently 11. they absolutely adore each other, and she was one of the reasons it took tim so long to confront his parents and leave home; he didn’t want to leave her behind. he sees her every fortnight on the weekends as he blackmails his parents to let her stay over. she often brings her friend daisy (nicknamed scraps) who riley gets on very well with.
. . . friends
riley . . .
tim and riley were childhood rivals long ago when tim transferred to riley’s school when riley was 13 and tim was 15. they took an immediate dislike for one another; tim viewed riley as the loud asshole that disrupts everyone else’s lessons, and riley viewed tim as the pretentious douchebag with the “i’m better than everyone else because i know who ernest hemingway is” attitude. their rivalry and hatred for each other became infamous all throughout the school, and they got into a two year long prank war with the pure intention of spiting one another. tim moved away when he finished his gcses at age 16.
years later, when riley was 19 and he had gotten his own flat, tim showed up very unexpectedly at his door. apparently tim had gotten into a very bad fight with his parents (he wouldn’t say what about), and found riley’s address on the internet, knowing that he was the only person he really got to know during his life that wasn’t a family member (tim’s life involved a lot of moving and he never really formed any concrete friends because of it). riley, who was in a very bad place at the time, agreed, as he knew he probably needed someone to help him. they immediately put their petty childhood beef behind each other and immediately clicked as best friends. tim intended on only staying for a few nights, but days turned into weeks and months turned into years, and now they permanently live with each other.
they act like an old married couple; one minute they’re insulting and mocking each other, the next they’re going on about how much they mean to each other. they wouldn’t trade their friendship for the world, they would do anything for each other, and they wish each other nothing but the best. they’re always seen as a duo, and they’re inseparable.
